Walking v10.33x

Programme Overview

South Shropshire walks throughout the year across the varied terrain of South Shropshire. The group mainatins a programme of walks and social events which welcomes new members and visitors to the area.

The heart of the area consists of the beautiful Shropshire Hills. These hills include the Long Mynd, Stiperstones, Clee Hills and Corvedale. This area was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1958 and covers a quarter of the county of Shropshire.

The Shropshire Hills are ideal for all types of walkers – from strenuous walking in wild country through to Sunday afternoon ramblers and the South Shropshire group offers walks for all abilities across this varied terrain, with a good dose of local historical and social history thrown into the walk.

The group offers a chance to participate in guided walks which pass through the less visited areas of this unique area. The landscape transitions from the Anglo-Welsh wild moorland and hills to the farming heritage of Shropshire lowland pastures.

Graded Walks

South Shropshire Ramblers offer a number of walks suitable to all types of active walker. The majority of walks are graded as Moderate. This means that you can expect a walk on well marked paths. A distance of 8-12 miles in lenth is average and an ascent of 1300' to be expected. All grades of walker and ability are encouraged to come on the walks, you will encounter stiles on most walks as we cross farmland with livestock. These stiles can be well maintained to complete disrepair. Therefore a degree of balance and agility is required when crossing these obstacles. The walks will therefore suit people of a moderate activity level with reasonable ability to negotiate hazards.

Further guidance on walk grading can be found on the Q&A page on the Home page.  Walk Descriptions Explained
